What Are Air Miles?

Air miles, also known as airline miles or frequent flyer miles, are the distance-based currency of airline loyalty programs. When you fly, you earn miles based on the distance traveled, which can be redeemed for free flights, upgrades, and other rewards.

Our calculator shows you the exact distance for any flight route using the great circle distance - the shortest path between two points on Earth's surface. This is the standard method airlines use to calculate miles earned on flights.

The distance is displayed in three units: statute miles (used by US airlines), kilometers (used internationally), and nautical miles (used in aviation). Most frequent flyer programs award miles based on the statute mile distance, though some use kilometers.

Elite status members earn bonus miles on top of the base distance - typically 25% for entry-level status up to 100% or more for top-tier members. Use our airline-specific calculators to see exactly how many miles you'll earn based on your status level.

Simply enter your departure and arrival airports in our calculator above. We'll instantly show you the flight distance in miles, kilometers, and nautical miles, along with estimated flight time.
Air miles follow the 'great circle' route - the shortest distance between two points on Earth's curved surface. This is typically shorter than driving distance, which follows roads and terrain.
You typically earn the actual flight distance as base miles, but this can vary by airline and fare class. Elite status members earn bonus miles - usually 25-100% extra depending on tier.
Our calculator uses the Haversine formula to calculate the great circle distance between airports, which is accurate to within 0.5%. Actual flight paths may vary slightly due to air traffic and weather.
Most major airlines award miles on paid flights, but basic economy fares may earn reduced miles. Award tickets and some deeply discounted fares may not earn miles at all.
